To reduce opioid prescription misuse and abuse, we urge you to use safe prescribing guidelines:
Educate patients and their families about the risks of using opioids.
Assess risk.
Increase the use of evidence-based prescription drug prevention education and tools. Register for and use the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PMP).
Screen the number of opioid prescriptions already written for the patient.
Prescribe opioids only when absolutely necessary, and limit quantity and dose.
