LIFE SCIENCES/HEALTHCARE INNOVATION
the future of healthcare starts here
Major health systems and giants of life science are at home in Greater Philadelphia.
When looking for the national epicenter for the life sciences and healthcare, look no farther than Greater Philadelphia. Research and development is at the
core of the region’s life sciences’ industry. With the seventh-largest academic R&D expenditures in the nation and an unmatched number of academic research institutions — seven medical schools, three pharmacy schools, two dental schools, a school of podiatry, a school of optometry, a school of veterinary medicine, 22 nursing schools, five children’s hospitals and
four cancer research centers — Greater Philadelphia is the global gathering place for innovative healthcare learning and leadership.
With deep R&D roots — the nation’s first hospital, medical school, cancer research center and school
of pharmacy were founded here — it’s no wonder that Greater Philadelphia is one of the top locations in the world for the design, development and manufacture of therapeutic, medical and dental devices. According to the Advanced Medical Technology Association, or AdvaMed, the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Delaware corridor accounts for one of the largest concentrations of medical technology companies in the country, right behind California.
FUN FACT: More than 2,000 medical technology companies call Greater Philadelphia home.
Digital health innovation is another burgeoning industry. With this in mind, the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia’s Health Care Innovation Collaborative launched an unprecedented, unified innovation program — GREATER THAN Open Calls — that allows young companies and entrepreneurs to present their healthcare ideas to the area’s established leaders in the field, including Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Drexel University, Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health, the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Safeguard Scientifics, Comcast, Independence Blue Cross and Christiana Care. This collaboration is accelerating medical breakthroughs.
Greater Philadelphia’s prominence as a leader in the life sciences is aided by the presence of 15 major health systems, more than 100 hospitals and four National Cancer Institute-designated cancer treatment centers.
FUN FACT: Eighty percent of U.S. pharmaceutical and biotech companies have a presence in the Delaware-New Jersey-Pennsylvania corridor, which
is home to more than 800 life sciences companies.
