How technology can exert power and control in domestic violence cases
This article will examine how the evolution of technology has enabled abusers to exert control over their victims in creative ways. With recent innovations in technology — specifically artificial intelligence (AI) — abusers can harass, stalk and otherwise engage in abusive behavior in ways unheard of 50 years ago.

Just 30 years ago, the portable phone was carried around in a shoulder bag. This was followed by the Blackberry, which made it con- venient to talk and stay organized. To- day, cell phones are small enough to fit into one’s pocket or handbag. The cell phone has become an extension of one’s identity. People use their cell phone to make calls, maintain their calendars, pay bills and monitor their home security. This total integration of the cell phone
into an individual’s life makes victims susceptible to abusers who use technol- ogy to exert control in ways that may be difficult to prove in court.
Abusive behavior can be demon- strated in different forms.1 Domes- tic violence can manifest as physical abuse, emotional abuse, mental abuse, financial abuse, reproductive abuse/ coercion, sexual abuse/exploitation, stalking, cyberstalking, cyberbullying and litigation abuse.2
