Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital’s mission
has been to help and heal patients through accessible, compassionate healthcare since 1933. Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital’s staff is comprised of more than 1,000 experienced medical personnel who offer acute care services in Delaware County and Southwest Philadelphia. The Mercy Health System hospital has been recognized
for its world-class facilities, for example Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care, Bariatric Surgery Center for Excellence and Certified Primary Stroke Center.
SAP America is the North American division of a worldwide software company that has some 350,000 customers in more than 180 countries. Of SAP’s 85,200 total employees, more than 1,000 work at the company’s U.S. headquarters in Newtown Square.
Sunoco Pipeline is helping the region become a major part of the global energy market. The company owns and operates a logistics business consisting of a geographically diverse portfolio of complementary crude oil, natural
gas liquids and refined products pipelines, terminalling
facilities and acquisition
and marketing assets.

provides hundreds of
jobs to residents of
Delaware County, and
that number is rising
steadily as the company
works to complete its Mariner East pipeline project (see Trends & Growth, page 10).
Villanova University is a co-ed Roman Catholic institution located in Villanova, Pa.
The university provides a traditional education rooted in the liberal arts, but also offers graduate and professional degrees in business, engineering, nursing, law and more. Villanova employs more than 2,500 faculty and staff, making it one of the largest employers in the area.
Wawa started in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Owner George Wood then moved
the business to Wawa, Pa., in 1902 to start dairy farming and a small
processing plant. So successful was the business that George’s
grandson, Grahame Wood, opened the first Wawa food market in 1956 as an outlet for
its dairy products. Wawa now offers food, beverages, coffee, fuel services and surcharge-free
ATMs. The company has more than 750 convenience retail stores in six
states, including 17 stores within five miles of Delaware County.
Widener University is a leading metropolitan university that employees more than 1,000 faculty members in Chester. Nursing, engineering, and social work are only three of 60 top-ranked programs offered at the institution. The private university focuses on providing students with a challenging and culturally diverse academic community no matter where they are in their academic journey.
