Public Schools
Chester County Public Schools has
nearly 78,500 students in its 104 schools, including charters and cyber programs, across 14 districts. Many of them rank high in national and state comparisons.
Downingtown Area School District
boasts 16 schools in “eight caring commu- nities,” with 12,000 students, making it the county’s largest school system. Niche.com gives it an overall grade of A+ for academ- ics, college prep and activities.
Great Valley School District, with headquarters in Malvern, is a small district with about 4,000 students in six schools.
The district considers technology central to learning and strives for a competent, knowledgeable staff and an up-to-date curriculum. Not immune to the workforce development trend, the school system partners with businesses to give its students school-to-work connections and opportunities.
West Chester Area School District has
16 schools in urban, suburban and rural areas of the county. Its career exploration program begins in 10th grade, and qualifying seniors may use May of their senior year in the Learn to Earn program, four weeks of on-site job experience after which they give an oral presentation of their experience.
Collegium Charter is a tuition-free, independent charter school that is larger than most of the schools in the county.
Malvern Preparatory School
With a charter from the West Chester Area School District, Collegium has 2,800 students in grades K-12 spread over six buildings on one campus. It features all- day kindergarten and Spanish instruction for all students, beginning in first grade.
Private Schools
Private schools are a popular option in Chester County — and there are more than 110 from which to choose. Many have religious affiliations, some are single- sex schools, and a few offer boarding.
In its 100th year as a boarding school, the Church Farm School in Exton remains true to its mission — making a first-
class education financially accessible to young men from all economic and ethnic backgrounds. Founded by an Episcopalian priest, the school has 190 students in four grades, with a demanding curriculum,
