With an abundance of cultural and performing-arts venues, Westchester County offers wide-ranging leisure and entertainment options. Here’s a brief sampling:
Located on a former estate near bucolic Katonah, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts is a prime destination for music aficionados to enjoy live performances of multiple genres, including classical, jazz, opera and The American Songbook.
The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester was the place for music
in the 1960s, hosting nearly every major rock act of the era from Janis Joplin to Pink Floyd. It is now owned by Peter Shapiro (of NYC’s Wetlands Preserve and Brooklyn Bowl fame) and is once gain Westchester’s premiere rock palace.
A National Historic Landmark, the Tarrytown Music Hall features acts such as Los Lobos & Funky Feat, annual showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and is home to Random Farms Kids’ Theater.
Paramount Hudson Valley in Peekskill, was originally a 1,500- seat movie theater and now hosts live acts such as Bruce Horsnby and Darlene Love, as well as dance and comedy performances.
Based in Pleasantville, the Jacob Burns Film Center is a nonprofit educational and cultural organization that hosts more than 200,000 annual visitors to its art-house theater. Showcasing independent, documentary and world cinema, the center also offers Media Arts and communications-education programming.
SPORTS
DINING
There’s no shortage of renowned chefs in Westchester, including a variety of big-name New York City chefs who have made the county their home for world-class restaurants.
At The Inn at Pound Ridge by Jean-Georges, you’ll bask in world-renowned Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s comfort-food tour de force in rustic yet affluent Pound Ridge.
Michael Psilakis runs perennial favorite MP Taverna in Irvington, which offers a modern spin on traditional Greek fare. And Top Chef alum Dale Talde recently opened Goosefeather, a Hong Kong-style Chinese restaurant at the newly renovated Tarrytown House Estate.
HISTORY
Graced by unique and historic architecture, the county is home to 19 National Historic Landmark sites and 231 properties and districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Historic Hudson Valley, an education non-profit, offers a host of educational programs and seasonal events (such as the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze) at its landmark sites, including Van Cortlandt Manor, Washington Irving’s Sunnyside, Kykuit, Union Church of Pocantico Hills, and Philipsburg Manor.
The Westchester Knicks are the exclusive NBA Development League affiliate of the New York Knicks. Based at the Westchester County Center, the Westchester Knicks provide hardcore basketball fans with access to hot NBA prospects as they prepare for competition at the next level.
Two Minor League baseball teams are in the Hudson Valley.
The Hudson Valley Renegades, affiliated with the New York Yankees, are a member of the Mid-Atlantic League and play at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, Dutchess County. The Rockland Boulders play in the Town of Pomona in Rockland County and are a member of the Can-Am Leauge.
FINE ARTS
Westchester offers art lovers a lot to love. Browse African and contemporary art at Purchase’s Neuberger Museum of Art or explore the Sculpture Garden of the Katonah Museum of Art. At Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate in Pocantico Hills, art and history buffs can experience works by Picasso, Warhol and other celebrated artists. In Peekskill, the rebranded Hudson Valley MOCA presents contemporary art exhibitions and programs.
Westchester also offers a wide array of galleries representing diverse styles and media. These include ArtsWestchester’s Arts Exchange in White Plains, Flat Iron Gallery in Peekskill, Blue Door Art Center in Yonkers and Upstream Gallery in Hastings-on-Hudson.
