MITCHELL S. CAIRO, MD, GLOBAL LEADER IN LYMPHOMA RESEARCH AND TREATMENTS
Mitchell Cairo, MD, is Chief, Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation, Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, Pathology, Microbiology
& Immunology and Cell Biology & Anatomy, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, Westchester Medical Center, New York Medical College.
Here, Dr. Cairo shares an overview of his groundbreaking work, and his Global
Symposium on Lymphomas, as well as the benefits of being based at Westchester Medical Center.
Our research program at the Westchester Medical Center (WMCHealth) and New York Medical College (NYMC) is focused on several areas including tumor immunology, cancer genetics and biology, stem, cellular and regenerative therapy, developmental therapeutics, and targeted therapy.
Some noteworthy recent research accomplishments include development of successful targeted antibody therapies for childhood, adolescent and
young adult Hodgkin Lymphoma and mature B-cell Lymphoma (100% survival) and the use of parental donors
“The environment at WMC Health is
ideal for translational research due to the support of hospital leadership, a skilled workforce and superb facilities, including a Good Manufacturing Practice processing facility (Cellular and Tissue Engineering Laboratory: CTEL)... terrific clinical facilities and clinical trials infrastructure, and exemplary nursing staff.” —Mitchell Cairo, MD
(haploidentical) to treat childhood, adolescent, and young adults with severe sickle cell disease with haploidentical stem cell transplantation (90% 1 year survival).
We just concluded the 7th International Symposium
on Childhood, Adolescent and Young Adult Lymphomas which was attended by 235 specialists from 28 countries and five continents. It was my
pleasure to serve as Chair, and
we welcomed over 175 scientific
presentations and state-of-the
art research in Lymphomas. is
Symposium was designed to
present the latest scientific and
clinical advances in childhood,
adolescent, and young adult
young adult non-Hodgkin
lymphoma, non-Hodgkin
lymphoma biopathology, non-
Hodgkin lymphoma genomics,
stem cell transplantation, immunobiology, imaging, late effects and survivorship, treatment, and prognosis.
On the horizon in 2023 will include our translational cellular therapy studies on patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 disease and other severe viral infections including cytomegalic, both congenital (neonatal) and in patients with immunocompromised diseases. We will additionally include studies with natural killer cells in Acute Leukemia and Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) NK cells in patients with solid tumors.
