           A HISTORIC TRAIL of BRIDGES
Once, our nation was home to nearly 14,000 covered bridges. Today, less than 900 remain and Pennsylvania leads the pack with close to 200. In Chester County’s
Brandywine Valley, the 14 covered bridges are an intrinsic
part of the landscape and heritage. From as early as 1850
and through to a rebuilding renovation in 2002, these unique architectural landmarks have graced the countryside. Follow a trail of bridges through every corner of Chester County, connect to two other counties, and visit one in the neighboring state of Delaware. Learn about the varied characteristics of Brandywine Valley’s covered bridges such as the “Burr” truss, step portals and how bridges were named. Discover Chester County’s three white covered bridges and the “two-span” bridge, the oldest and the most photographed. History unfolds throughout Chester County’s beautiful countryside.
