  THROUGH THE GATEWAY
TRANSPORTATION
Through Delaware to America, From Delaware to the World
“Within an eight hour drive-time delivery day, you can reach about 50 million households. If you expand that drive time to 24 hours, you can reach almost two-thirds of the nation’s population. You can also reach about 40 percent of the major Canadian markets as well. We think the location within the mid-Atlantic region and within the Northeast Corridor along I-95 really makes us well suited for same-day delivery to the densely populated North East.”
– Thomas J. Hanna, president of Harvey Hanna & Associates
That’s the math they’ve done at Harvey Hanna & Associates, and the numbers are clear: Delaware is one of most centrally located gateways, providing fast access to the entirety of the Eastern Seaboard
“You can drive an 18-wheel truck out of the Port of Wilmington and not hit another traffic light before arriving in either Miami or the Canadian border,” said Carla Sydney Stone, president of the World Trade Center Delaware.
The Delaware Memorial Bridge, which spans the Delaware River and connects one of the most heavily trafficked highway corridors in the Northeast, is a vital transportation link on the I-95 corridor, said James Salmon, public information officer for the Delaware River and Bay Authority. Last year, the bridge experienced 2.4 million commercial toll transactions, nearly 67 percent of which were five-axle tractor-trailers transporting goods and materials
to destinations nationwide.
But roads are hardly the only way in and out of the region. By ferry, by air, by sea and by rail, good and services flow into Delaware from around the world.
“Thanks to the incorporation rate in Delaware, there are a significant number of aircraft housed at the New Castle-Wilmington Airport that belong to Fortune 500 companies,” Salmon said.
A look at the businesses that move goods through the gateway:
New Castle-Wilmington Airport
The largest airport operated by the Delaware River & Bay Authority is the main airfield serving Delaware’s most populous county, with three major runways, 10 taxiways and several aircraft parking ramps. It is home to 68 business jets and 220 propeller aircraft.
Delaware Coastal Airport
International flights can now land at the airport that’s closest
to Delaware’s beaches, thanks to a recent arrangement between Georgetown Air Services at U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The Federal Aviation Administration has invested nearly $40 million in this southern Delaware airport, extending its runway and installing taxiway lighting.
Civil Air Terminal at Dover
Air Force Base
Strategically placed at the crossroads of commerce, state government and the military, the Civil Air Terminal at the air force base offers easy access to U.S. Highway 13, the 517-mile road for the entire Delmarva Peninsula, extending from North Carolina to Philadelphia, and Del. 1, the north/south connector for the entire state of Delaware.
Summit Aviation
With customers including Sikorsky, Boeing, the United States Park Police and the Cleveland Browns, Summit is an industry leader for aircraft maintenance, repair, avionics upgrades, mission system integration, modifications, paint, flight testing/training support, logistics support, and aircraft sales and leasing. It is located on
a 550-acre, private airport (KEVY) in Middletown, Delaware.
