 Facilities
Around our campus, the Facilities Department continues to do an outstanding job under the leadership of Mark Poore, maintaining a clean, safe and usable school building that can make everyone proud. Brick pointing and roof repair, which have been ongoing projects for the prior two summers, were completed in the summer of 2018, helping seal the envelope of the school and completing a $2.5 million investment in our physical plant.
The Facilities Department, in conjunction with the Finance Office and trustee John Byrne ’67, initiated an energy audit in 2017
to assess the school’s energy consumption and evaluate the systems governing their operation at Salesianum. While this effort was intended to establish benchmarks for consumption and, eventually, reduce the carbon footprint of our existing physical plant, the study’s results also provide an opportunity
to significantly reduce energy costs through the acquisition
of new hardware and automation systems. The school is still evaluating the study’s recommendations to determine the
best opportunities to impact both the bottom line and the environment. Regardless of the specific plan, likely upgrades include widespread changes to lighting, heating and air conditioning equipment and the potential to add solar panels to the school’s roof.
Additional work during the 2017-18 school year focused on security, with Salesianum making needed upgrades to the school’s security and safety systems, installing new cameras inside and outside the building and developing a new electronic platform to control door access. Each of these upgrades is scalable and will allow the school to add more features and points of access in the future.
Finally, after examination and study throughout the year, the floors in the Fusco Athletic Center, only recently constructed, were found to be porous, with water slowing seeping up from the ground. With students out of the building, this situation was mitigated in the summer and the floors replaced. The school thanks its partner, The Whiting Turner Contracting Company, for helping to identify the issue and, ultimately, fixing the problem.
