Putnam County
is named for ISRAEL PUTNAM,
a general in the American Revolutionary War and a hero in the French and Indian War.
The 6.6-mile stretch of the
OLD ALBANY POST ROAD
in Philipstown is one of the oldest unpaved dirt roads still in use in the United States. Built on established Native American trails, the road dates back to the mid-17th century.
THE PUTNAM COUNTY COURTHOUSE,
built in Carmel in 1814, is the second-oldest courthouse still in use in New York State.
THE COLD SPRING HISTORIC DISTRICT covers much of the central area in the village of Cold Spring, and is recognized as one of the leading 19th century townscape preservations in the Hudson Valley.
Built in 1735,
MANDEVILLE HOUSE
remains the oldest house in Garrison, and served as the headquarters for General Israel Putnam during the Revolutionary War.
THE GREAT SWAMP, located in eastern Putnam County and stretching into eastern Dutchess County to the north, covers nearly 6,000 acres and is one of the largest wetlands in the state of New York.
