Many of you may have noticed that department stores and other large retailers had set up extensive
Christmas displays before Labor Day. Retailers looking to make as much profit
as possible skip straight from the summer to entice consumers to start spending for a season that, in my opinion, should be more about family and not about spending and over-extending on things that do not reflect the true meaning of the season. We are expected to put away the shorts and bathing suits, dress up the kids for Halloween and then rush headlong through the “glittery” and “must-have-this” season of Christmas.

While hurricane of holiday greed rages, carve out your own place for inner peace
be a day for families to gather together to
give thanks and enjoy a time leading up
to the time Christians prepare to celebrate Christmas. Thankfully there are some retailers who realize this is a time for family and do give their employees off. This festive multi-holiday season known as a time of giving thanks and for “peace on Earth to all men of goodwill” appears to have become a time not to give thanks on Thanksgiving or to celebrate Christ’s birth

and his desire to bring peace and love to this world. Instead, it brings to mind the famous biblical story about the moneychangers at the Temple in Jerusalem, leaving out the
part where Jesus condemns their behavior. Those CEOs and others responsible for turning Thanksgiving into a mandatory shopping day are today’s hypothetical biblical moneychangers who Jesus would denounce if he were here today. Many of these retailers stay open as late as midnight on Christmas Eve, enticing consumers on a spending spree until the last minute and depriving workers in these non-essential businesses of time with their families at a time families should be together.
I understand that businesses need to make money and many workers need these jobs to make ends meet. I just think there
is a better way to provide these services. I wonder how many Italian-American families, who claim to pride themselves on family and
