Sussex County is home to new Italian-American Heritage Club
Italian-American Herald
The recently formed Italian-American Heritage Club of Sussex County Delaware is now welcoming new members.
The club’s mission is to promote and share an appreciation and awareness of the Italian-American culture and heritage and to sponsor artistic, cultural, social and educa- tional activities relating to Italian origin.
The club members gathered for a monthly meeting on March 23 at Preshy’s Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach.
Club President Lynn Lombardo Stanley said she spearheaded the formation of the club after discovering an unfilled need in Sussex County, where she moved in 2014 after living in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
“One of the first things I did when I moved to Delaware was to look for the local Italian-American Heritage Club,” she said. “Much to my surprise and disappointment, I found there was none! I really couldn’t
believe it.”
Last fall she teamed up with Anello “Neil”
Garefino, another Sussex newcomer, to estab- lish the club as a nonprofit organization, form a board and create the bylaws.
Stanley said she’s encouraged by the interest that has been shown in the club, and excited about its future.
“It’s so exciting to feel the enthusiasm of every Italian-American we happen to speak with,” she said. “We have so many exciting things we’d like to see happen, from monthly meetings where we share our own stories or feature a guest speaker, to forming a bocce team, to road trips near and far, and potluck dinners where everyone brings their own specialty.”
The club’s other founding members,
In addition to Stanley: Francesca Moretto Carbone, vice president; Anello “Neil” Garefino, treasurer; Carole Culp, secretary; and Marlene Evans, Tina Donofrio and Tiffany Guido, directors at large. IAH
