Wilmington Country Club has a rich history of hosting major events, including the 1913 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the 1971 U.S. Amateur and the 2013 Palmer Cup. But nothing compares to a PGA
Tour event—a logistical endeavor that takes a major effort from the host club’s members and an army of volunteers. “There are 455 members volunteering, the largest number in the history of the BMW Championship,” says Michael Shank, Wilmington Country Club’s head golf pro. “In total, there are over 2,000 volunteers coming from 24 states, with 897 volunteers from Delaware.”
For anyone planning to attend the tournament, Shank offers some course knowledge to maximize viewing. “We anticipate between 25,000 and 30,000 spectators a day during the competition, and there are a number of great holes to watch from,” he says. “It’s worth noting that the PGA Tour will be playing a
different routing of holes than our regular course routing. On the front nine, Holes three to five present several interesting shots for players. The tee shot on the fifth hole is the highest point on the property and provides a visually stunning view for spectators, while challenging players with a 495-yard par 4.”
And then there’s the back nine. “Holes 12 to 18 should provide compelling drama down the stretch,” Shank says. “The 634-yard par 5 12th hole has a green fronted with water, which should be fun. The 13th hole and 15th hole—both par 3’s with water in play from 170 and 234 yards—will also make great viewing.”
