NEW ROCHELLE
 Update from Commissioner of
Development Luiz C. Aragon
When Development Commissioner Luiz Ara- gon says, “We’re a city with a soul and it’s that soul that we need to explore,” he means it. They’re not just words, but a call to action. After joining New Rochelle’s leadership team and assuming his new role in February, Aragon has been in action mode, focused squarely on New Rochelle’s growth and development. As Commissioner, Aragon is concerned about the City’s physical environ- ment as well as its quality of life. He shares his thoughts on his top priorities and vision for the future of New Rochelle that he fondly refers to as “MY city”.
Team effort
“At the core of everything I do is a cohesive team—not only the Development staff, but everyone who works in City Hall—are all part of a large internal team. Add to that the broader team that includes the people of New Rochelle. I’m very conscious of the fact that I really work for 80,000 people—my job is to serve them and do what they expect
to see our city grow. Right now, I’m focused on understanding our issues and communi- cating.”
Greatest challenges
“We need to strike the right balance between preservation and growth, recognizing that
some parts of the city need to be preserved, while other areas need to grow and change. It’s critical to recognize these differences. For example, the best solution for the I-95 corridor is not the same solution needed
for the waterfront or the solution that works for Wykagyl. If we can accept that we’re a mosaic of neighborhoods that behave in different ways, we will have a city that’s very harmonious.
The waterfront, including Davids Island is another challenge. The Waterfront Revitalization Program and the Waterfront Gateway Design Project provide blueprints for the future growth of our waterfront—our diamond in the rough.”
