Development in Yonkers has also intro- duced a host of new retailers this year, includ- ing the regional attraction, Legoland Discov- ery Center.
Another project involves Cross County Shopping Center, which has undergone sig- nificant changes in the last several years. Most recently Panera Bread Café opened at the
Center, and coming soon shoppers will also be able to enjoy House of Hoops, a new concept by Footlocker; Lids, the destination for sport, fashion and collegiate hats; plus Garage, a fashion forward concept from Montreal designed for the free-spirited teenage girl.
“It is our goal to continually update the merchandise mix, so that we are responding to our shoppers needs,” said Charles Fergu- son, senior property manager for Macerich.
“Shoppers asked for more options when it came to dining, and we’ve been pleased to open casual eateries and restaurants such as Panera, BGR the Burger Joint, and TGI Friday’s over the last eighteen months.”
In 2013, Cross County Shopping Center plans to open an additional 40,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. Addition- ally, two new sit-down restaurants are planned to open in the north parking lot, near Macy’s. Another exciting addition to the center: Man- hattan-based Friend Development plans to renovate the existing office tower and former Cross County Hospital into an eight-story hotel with 155 hotel rooms and amenities for guests, including a pool and small meeting rooms.
In 2013, the Yonkers IDA will step up efforts to promote the City with a regional marketing campaign, and it recently partnered with the Westchester County Association on Blueprint City Showcase: Yonkers, a one-day program for developers and investors.
Projects in coordination with the Yonkers Department of Planning and Development are in the pipeline. The Yonkers IDA is taking a closer look at the size of property tax abate- ments to make sure they balance the interests of developers with those of the city’s other taxpayers. The organization will be implement- ing requirements so that developers receiving incentives make a strong commitment to hire local residents during construction.
