IIn the early 1900s,Yonkers was a fledgling city with a population of 48,000, electric trolley cars were replacing horse-drawn car- riages, and a hot lunch for the working class cost 15 cents. The Concert Garden on Main Street was a local venue for vaude- villians. And, forward-looking men and women, many of whom lived in the downtown riverfront area, were busy pioneering civic and social improvements.
More than a decade later, the same spirit of discovery and development characterizes the great city of Yonkers! Only now Yonkers is the third largest city in New York State (population: 196,000), and the largest city in Westchester County, with nearly 200,000 people located adjacent to New York City’s northern border. Yonkers has a transportation system that cannot be matched. For this and many other reasons, the city has become a regional attraction where economic and demographic trans- formation is the buzz of the day.
