NEMOURS opens its doors to children young and old
Nemours Estate began the year by throwing out its old rulebook and offering visitors unprecedented access to the grounds of this 300-acre country estate.
The estate, just minutes from downtown Wilmington, still has its formal gardens, but its caretakers have dropped the formality. That’s in keeping with what they see as philanthropist Alfred I. du Pont’s
dying wishes to keep the property preserved for the pleasure and benefit of the public — including patients of the world-renowned children’s hospital that bears his name next door.
The difference is night and day. “We’ve had a lot of families here, bringing kids as young as newborns,” says Executive Director John C. Rumm. “Allowing kids to come in here is just second nature.”

A Beer Garden grows in Wilmington
The creators of The Beer Garden at Local West, right across the street from Penn Station in Manhattan, only had
to take a short hop on Amtrak to Wilmington last summer to open Constitution Yards on the Wilmington Riverfront.
Local breweries — including Dogfish Head, 16 Mile and Mispillion — are well represented on an all-star rotating beer list, but the frozen Dark & Stormy cocktail gets a lot of love too. The seasonal beer garden — with
room enough for beer, barbecue and backyard games like corn hole toss, bocce and life-size Jenga — will stay open through October 30th.
