The 229th Annual Meeting of the Medical Society of Delaware took place on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the Medical Society of Delaware Building and Conference Center in Newark, Del. Guests during the morning program included American Medical Association Board of Trustees Chair-Elect, Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH; S. William Clark,
MD, Chair of the Southeastern Delegation of the American Medical Association; Theodore Christopher, MD, Past President of the Pennsylvania Medical Society; and Benjamin Z. Stallings II, MD, President of the Maryland Medical Society.
Three education sessions were presented in the morning prior to the commencement of the Council Meeting, providing a total of 2.5 continuing medical education credits to be claimed by attending all
three educational sessions. This year’s educational program was built around
the topic of “Technology: Pioneering the Future of Medicine.” Recognized leaders in the application of technology to the medical profession provided information about biodegradable sensors, use of 3D printing, and Blockchain technology.
The Lewis B. Flinn Lecture began
the educational program with speaker Thanh Duc Nguyen, PhD presenting
on Biodegradable Piezoelectrics.
Dr. Nguyen, Assistant Professor in
the Departments of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at the University
of Connecticut, educated the audience on using advanced technology in the health care profession; exploring new ideas
and new applications from the presented technology; and realizing opportunities for collaboration with physicians and
other health care professionals that bring technology and engineering concepts
into medical applications. Sharon Gould, MD, from the Division of Pediatric Radiology, Department of Medical Imaging at Nemours Children’s Health System in Wilmington, provided the fundamentals of the imaging needed for data acquisition for 3D printing, reviewed key steps in model creation and printing, and introduced potential applications of 3D modeling. “Pioneerism the Delaware Way: Blockchain Firsts in Business, Collaboration, Innovation, and Substantive Results” was the presentation provided by Mr. Vincent Albanese, CEO and Founder of Haven Health Solutions; Mr. Mark Thompson, MHSA, Executive Director
of the Medical Society of Delaware; and Mr. Mark Jacobs, MHA, CIO of Delaware Health Information Network (DHIN). They
