Report of Elections, Proposed Budget, and Bylaws Changes

The 227th Annual Meeting of the Medical Society of Delaware took place on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Medical Society of Delaware Building
and Conference Center in Newark, Del. AMA President-Elect, David O. Barbe, MD, and Stephen J. Rockower, MD President of the Maryland Medical Society, were guest attendees.
Three education sessions were presented in the morning prior to the commencement of
the Council Meeting, providing a total of 2.5 continuing medical education credits to
be claimed by attending all three educational sessions. This year’s educational program was built around the topic of Telemedicine. Recognized leaders of telemedicine provided information from different aspects of telemedicine. Steve North, MD, Medical Director and Founder of the Center for Rural Health Innovation in North Carolina, addressed the history of telehealth, the positive impacts, and how to successfully integrate telehealth into practice to improve patient outcomes. Local expert Carolyn Morris, Director of Telehealth Planning and Development with Delaware Health and Social Services and Co-Chair of the Delaware Telehealth Coalition, provided an overview of the legislative and regulatory changes  sources. Our third presenter, also from Delaware, was Michael Kurliand, MS, BSN, RN with Nemours Children’s Health System and Director of Telehealth and CareConnect
in Wilmington, who discussed an industry overview of telemedicine across the country, described the various telemedicine models, and speculated on future telemedicine models and considerations for clinicians and operations.
Awards presented included those to our physician members who were recognized for their 50 years as a member of the medical profession and in appreciation of their dedicated service to the citizens of Delaware. The Young Physician Award was presented to Joseph J. Straight, MD. The President’s Award and the Daniel A. Alvarez, MD Distinguished Service Award were presented at the Gala held in the evening to Nancy Fan, MD and Nicholas O. Biasotto, DO, respectively. Stephen J. Kushner, DO was also recognized at the Gala with a special recognition award for his work with the “Campaign for Kids...It’s OBVIOUS” initiative.
