HIDDEN TREASURES
We know that most people are inspired to travel to Gettysburg because of our amazing Civil War history. But don’t just stick to the heart of our county, venture to the corners and discover some really cool stories you might not be aware of.
MARY JEMISON
ST. IGNATIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, BIGLERVILLE
In April 1758, a French and
Indian raid in Adams County
resulted in many slain and the
capture of sixteen-year-old Mary. She
was adopted by two Seneca women and remained within the tribe until her death at 91.

English and Irish Catholics formed the first distinctly Catholic settlement in Pennsylvania right here in Adams County. In 1741, a log dwelling and chapel
was constructed to serve the settlers. By 1784, the congregation had grown to 1,000 members and required a larger church. The largest church within the
new nation was completed in 1787 and is still in use today.
HANOVER HORSE FARMS
HANOVER PIKE, HANOVER
For nearly 75 years, this Pennsylvania nursery has been a world-class breeder of Standardbred horses leading the annual money earnings as calculated by the United
States Trotting Association. It is both beautiful and peaceful to stop by the farms and
watch the horses or walk the stalls to see
the new foals.
