AUTHENTIC
ADAMS COUNTY
Authentic — adj. — of undisputed origin; genuine.
Adams County is a special place — yes, partially because of the Battle of Gettysburg and partially thanks to President Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address.” Those are not the only reasons this place is special. Adams County is
a family community built on dedication, respect of the land, fresh air and relationships. We work hard and we play hard. We invite strangers into our
community and our homes and we make them friends. The stories of Adams County
are what make our destination special.
SPECIAL PLACES
In 1914, the Noah Sheely family needed to build
a barn. They decided on a barrel barn, which was so
unconventional that people actually went to watch construction
The barn had not only been raised on the land, but from the land, as the wood used in construction was all from trees felled on the farm. A truly authentic Adams County structure, the Historic Round Barn can still
be enjoyed today as a farm market and special event venue.
SPECIAL PEOPLE
Ed Gotwalt opened his first store in
Adams County in 1975. Just two miles from where his store resides today was Mister Ed’s: The Area’s Most Unusual General Store where people gathered for snacks
and to take in curiosities including his small elephant collection. Much like Adams County, Mister Ed, as he is lovingly known, is simply amazing and a ton of fun. In 1983, the General Store was re-invented as the Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium showcasing thousands of elephants. Today, his granddaughter Nicole and her husband Isaac carry on his amazing collection of over 12,000 elephants, artwork and the most delicious treats one can find on Route 30 in Adams County. It is a must- stop along one of America’s most famous highways in Adams County . . . and you may just meet Mister Ed.
SPECIAL FOOD
If a dish had to be used as a
logo for Adams County, that
scrumptious treat would be
a warm slice of apple pie,
maybe with a side of vanilla
ice cream made fresh from
Adams County cream. Adams
County is synonymous with apples
. . . we are Apple Country, growing the prized fruit on nearly 19,000 acres of the county’s farmland. You are sure to find a delicious pie baked fresh at any of our farm markets or grab a slice like the Hot Adams Apple Pye from the Dobbin House or a piece of deep-dish Old
