Miller Metal Fabrication
The last thing Martin Miller III wanted to do was get into the family business. He worked at Miller Metal Fabrication almost his entire life, starting when he was 5 and his job was sweeping the floors. So he went in a different direction and earned a degree in social sciences and got a desk job working for the state .
“When you get a job like that, you know it will involve a lot of paperwork. But I had no idea how much paperwork,” Miller says with a laugh. “So I came back here and saw a different side of this business and had a greater appreciation for it. It’s kind of funny how things come back around.”
Miller is part of a family business, Miller Metal Fabrication, which was started by his father, Martin Miller Jr., who grew up on a farm in Greensboro, Md., and got a job working as a combine mechanic for Green Giant. Martin Miller Jr. used his mechanical know-how and instincts to eventually open his own shop in Brid- geville 25 years ago, and the business grew from there.
Miller Metal Fabrication makes customized components that
are usually part of a bigger picture, and they subcontract to every business imaginable. They have engineers on-site who work on specs with customers. Almost all businesses have been affected by technology, and Miller’s has changed even more than most.
“Dad likes to say that he can do now in an hour, with technol- ogy, something that might have taken a week to do 20 or 30 years ago,” Miller says.
Miller says a fabrication business has to keep up with the lat- est developments to keep up with the competition. He says a lot of their business comes from people who type “laser cutters in the Northeast” into Google. The company name pops up.
Technology and competition also means new and better ma- chines, which cost lots of money. “It does get a little scary,” Miller says. “We just brought in a very expensive piece of machinery, a new laser machine for cutting plate. That cost is north of a mil- lion, so it’s quite an investment.”
