PUTNAM COUNTY
Striking the ideal balance of culture, commerce, and outdoor pursuits, Putnam County brims with charming downtowns, lakes, historic sites, and swaths of farmland. But don’t let its natural treasures fool you, the region also goes big on culture: You’ll find
a nationally acclaimed Shakespeare festival, a world-class museum dedicated to contemporary Italian art, and the 225-acre Chuang Yen Monastery, home to the largest Buddha statue in the Western Hemisphere, within its borders.

Parks, farms, and preserves offer hikers, history buffs, and families plenty of reasons to get outdoors. The Appalachian Trail, Great Swamp, Putnam County Trailway, and 14,000-acre Clarence Fahnestock State Park offer miles of bike paths, repurposed rail trails, scenic campgrounds, and picnic spots. Take an audiovisual tour of the ruins and replicas
of 19th-century ironworks at the West Point Foundry Preserve in Cold Spring, or embrace Putnam County’s agricultural attributes in Brewster with a visit to Tilly Foster Farm, Green Chimneys Farm & Wildlife Center, or Salinger’s Orchard.
During the spring and summer, Stonecrop Gardens’ 15 acres burst with blooms, while Mahopac Golf and Beach Club offers pristine greens to practice
your drive, chip, and putt. A riverview picnic on the lawn at Boscobel House and Gardens in Garrison, followed by a performance at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival — which will move to its new, permanent location nearby in 2022 — is a can’t-miss tradition.
Winter brings its own outdoor pursuits at the Thunder Ridge Ski Area in Patterson, featuring 22 trails and Liberty Paintball (open year-round). Any time of year, Cold Spring is a popular day-trip destination for New Yorkers who love its boutique shops, antique stores, Hudson House River Inn, and farm-to-table cafés. Hudson Hil’s is arguably the most popular dining destination in town, with a market of local products and a decadent breakfast menu.

       DID YOU KNOW?
The unassuming town of Carmel has produced more than its share of professional athletes and sports figures. Just a sampling includes Lou Albano (“Captain Lou”), wrestler/manager; Ryan Kelly, basketball player; Tom Newton, running back for the New York Jets; and Sabrina Vega, a member of the USA World Championship Gymnastics team in 2011.
