  ROCKLAND COUNTY
Small in size, and only about 30 miles from New York City, Rockland County is big on things to do. Shoppers spend their time at The Shops at Nanuet and the Palisades Center, which also packs family fun, with a bowling alley, ice rink, and the world’s tallest indoor ropes course. Federally des- ignated as a Preserve America Community, outdoorsy types love that Rockland is approximately one-third parkland, with Bear Mountain, Harriman, Nyack Beach, High Tor, and Rockland Lake State Parks all within its boundaries. Other highlights include its waterfront and sidewalk dining options, golf courses and country clubs, mom-and-pop shops, and historic sites — including the oldest pub in America (The ’76 House in Tappan) and the Edward Hopper House museum in Nyack. Foodies are especially blessed, with a plethora of restaurants in Nyack, New City, Nanuet, and Piermont.

I ndustries that thrive here include health, retail, manufacturing, phar- maceutical, and research business- es, including Columbia University’s
Lamont–Doherty Earth Observatory, while groups like the Rockland Business Women’s Network and Rockland Business Association actively support the county’s lively business scene. The recently opened Valley Rock Inn & Mountain Club in the vil- lage of Sloatsburg contributes to the wealth and growing development of the county.
In historic Haverstraw, visit the Haverstraw Brick Museum to learn how the town helped to build Manhattan with its 42 brickyards. Today, com- muters can ferry across the Hudson to Ossining’s Metro-North station, and on to Manhattan, but you may not want to leave before enjoying a Wrench IPA at
Industrial Arts Brewing, which opened in a pre-Civil War industrial complex in Garnerville (a Hamlet of Haverstraw) in 2017. Waterfront restaurants such as the Hudson Water Club are also a draw.
Rockland County is also home to great schools, with several districts (Suffern Central, Nyack, Clarkstown Central, South Orangetown, and Nanuet) ranking in the top 100 in the state on Niche’s list. Clarkstown, set amid a bucolic landsape featuring Rockland Lake and High Tor State Parks, is also listed as one of the 100 best places to live in the United States by Money magazine in 2019.
Did you know?
Haverstraw brick was used to rebuild New York City after a massive 1835 fire in lower Manhattan.
