HISTORY
Graced by unique and historic architecture, the county is home
to 19 National Historic Landmark sites and 230 properties and districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
One of these is the John Jay Homestead, in Katonah, the estate of one of our nation’s founding fathers and President of the Second Continental Congress. It is a New York State Park and a historic site.
Historic Hudson Valley, an education non-profit, offers a host of educational programs and seasonal events (such as the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze) at its landmark sites, including Van Cortlandt Manor, Washington Irving’s Sunnyside, Kykuit, Union Church of Pocantico Hills, and Philipsburg Manor.
PARKS AND TRAILS
Westchester has more than 50 county parks — including recreation areas, trailways, golf courses, and nature preserves — to explore. The North-South County Trailway provides bikers, joggers and walkers with a 36-mile pathway that runs the length of the county from the New York City border to Putnam County. Saxon Woods Park is a 700-acre property offering a variety of recreational facilities, including the county’s largest swimming pool, an
aquatic playground, and an 18-hold golf course. The Bronx River Pathway is a paved trail spanning central Westchester in three sections, totaling nine miles from Valhalla to Yonkers. Sites of interest along the path include Kensico Dam Plaza and Greenburgh Nature Center.
Spanning 14 municipalities, the Westchester RiverWalk is
a 51.5-mile multifaceted pathway paralleling the Hudson River. When fully complete, it will link village centers, historic sites, parks and river access points via a connection of trails, esplanades and boardwalks.
PLAYLAND
Rye’s historic Playland is a 279-acre recreational complex, featuring a 40-acre amusement park with more than 50 rides enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. A pool, beach and the Westchester Children’s Museum is also on the property.
MUSCOOT FARM
Alfred B. DelBello Muscoot Farm is an early-20th-century interpretative farm museum in Katonah. Open year-round, it offers a full schedule of programs for families, as well as group tours, farmyard visits and hayrides. More than seven miles of hiking trails allow visitors to explore some of Muscoot’s 777 acres.
ROCKEFELLER STATE PARK PRESERVE
This 1425-acre property is the former Pocantico Hills and Rockwood Hall country estates of John D. Rockefeller family and William Rockefeller. With its crushed stone carriage roads, it is the idyllic spot for jogging, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. With 180 recorded species of birds, it holds an IBA (Important Bird Area) designation by the National Audubon Society.
The Westchester Riverwalk in Irvington, one of the 14 municipalities that enjoys the 51.5-mile pathway.
From most points in Westchester, it takes less than 60 minutes to reach Midtown Manhattan.
