the industry's most challenging applications, consistently setting new benchmarks for filling precision and operational simplicity for clients in the pharmaceutical, medical device, dental, health & beauty, chemical and defense industries. e Mount Vernon-based company is co-managed by Deborah Smook and her husband Eli Uriel. While Uriel oversees engineering design and production, Smook takes the lead in sales, marketing, business development, finance and general administration. With an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and an MBA from Wharton, she joined forces with Uriel 16 years ago, following a career consulting
in MedTech marketing, strategic planning, due diligence and market development for companies such as Pfizer.
“Since then, we have been creating new concepts for
the machines together and growing the business together,” says Smook. “We had a real growth year in 2023 and are hoping to continue that growth in 2024 with a focus on pharmaceuticals and pharmacy products.”
With an equipment portfolio that features a broad
range of standardized equipment, TurboFil also frequently collaborates with customers to develop, design and construct customized, built-to-spec machines.
Shaping the Future of Advanced Manufacturing
Smook is a member of the Westchester County’s Office
of Economic Development’s Advanced Manufacturing
Task Force, which, “offers the opportunity for us to share our experience, based on our many years in the business, as well as our thoughts, input and insights in terms of where we see the County’s manufacturing sector going in the future.”
The Benefits of a Westchester Base
“ere are so many reasons why Westchester is the right place for us. Accessibility to public transit is very important, and it enables us to draw from the lower Westchester workforce,” she says. “As we have a very centralized location in Mount Vernon, we even have employees coming to us from other counties. is is great, because our operations require a very skilled, diverse and educated labor force. In addition, we have access to a lot of local vendors – everyone covers this area.”
The American Dream
“One of the things I like most about manufacturing is that it offers opportunity. College costs so much money these days, but there are other paths as well. ere are a high number of immigrants in our field. Manufacturing pays well and it offers a career path. People who work with us learn something new every day. ere is so much to know. Manufacturing is one of the sectors where the American dream is still alive.”
