CRITICAL CARE MONITORING: RETIA
One of the first tenants at the BioInc@NYMC incubator, Retia brings together industry-leading expertise in physiology, signal processing and computational algorithms to engineer innovative monitoring solutions that give clinicians up-to-the minute data that they can rely on to make informed patient care decisions. Critical care clinicians want to monitor cardiac output, or blood flow from the heart, to assess whether vital organs are receiving enough oxygen and nutrients to survive.
Retia is committed to giving all clinicians access to cardiac output monitoring by providing an accurate, non-invasive and affordable solution for use on all high-risk patients.
Retia’s lead product, the Argos Cardiac Output Monitor, is equipped with the company’s innovative Multi-Beat Analysis (MBATM) algorithm. The Argos connects to and analyzes the data from the patient’s bedside vital signs monitor to
calculate cardiac output without ever touching the patient. In addition, the Argos guarantees superior monitoring performance, quality, reliability, and compatibility with hospital Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems for enhanced management of blood flow.
“Our product helps assess how well a patient’s heart and circulation are working, which has proven especially important during the current pandemic,” says Retia Co-Founder and CEO Marc Zemel. “Research shows that using cardiac output to guide therapy, you can keep some patients off ventilators, and get them off vents sooner, as well as prevent re-intubation.”
Beyond developing new algorithms to aid in monitoring and guiding therapy for high- risk patients, the company recently loaned 40 monitors to healthcare systems across the region to help the fight against COVID. “Critical care workers are A+ people. It’s been a privilege to make a contribution during this pandemic.”
ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL: COGNOME
Cognome started at Montefiore Health System when founder Parsa Mirhaji, MD realized that a modern, integrated care delivery system would need a buffet of thousands of machine learning (ML) algorithms, artificial intelligence (AI) models, and decision support systems (CDSS), both clinical and operational. But these models cannot operate alone - they need to connect, inform and learn from each other to create a holistic view of a patient’s health. Fragmented models that are not aware of, and cannot talk to each other would ultimately harm patients. Cognome was conceived to address this challenge, and provide a scalable platform for large healthcare systems to launch
“Westchester is an ideal location for us due to our proximity to New York City and its world-class hospital systems. As a medical technology manufacturer, being based in the County allows us to enjoy proximity to engineering talent, to our customers, to our clinical partners and to our investors. Westchester is one of the top 5 tech ecosystems in the nation.” —Marc Zemel, S.M., MBA, Co-Founder and CEO, Retia
