Mastercard is a global financial ser- vices corporation founded in 1966 by a consortium of banks in California. The company’s principal business is processing payments between mer- chant banks and card-issuing banks or credit unions of consumers who use their branded debit, credit and pre- paid cards to make purchases. Prior to going public in 2006, the company was a cooperative owned by the more than 25,000 financial institutions that issue its branded cards.
