  Longwood Gardens
5 Finally, the crown in the du Pont legacy is Longwood Gardens. Pierre du Pont (1870–1954)
bought the property in 1906 to preserve its trees, and he built the major garden features that today comprise the world’s premier horticultural display. Situated on 1,077 acres, Longwood features lush indoor gardens as well as 20 outdoor gardens, a breathtaking conservatory and architectural grandeur. Built in 1919, the conservatory is one of the world’s great greenhouse structures.
Longwood has something extraordinary on the horizon; in fall of 2024, Longwood Reimagined: A New Garden Experience will debut. The centerpiece and largest component of the project is the new 32,000-square-foot on water. The interior will be home to Mediterranean- inspired gardens set amid pools, canals and fountains in an exquisite, tapestry-like design. Additional elements of Longwood Reimagined include the relocated and reconstructed 3,800-square-foot Cascade Garden; the new outdoor Bonsai Courtyard; the renewed Waterlily Court, an outdoor room serving as a gateway to the new West Conservatory and relocated Cascade Garden; and new dining and event spaces. Just imagine!
