Visit all three of these incomparable tours and be inspired by this
great family and their home, the Brandywine Valley. The three
tour sites are within minutes of
the Brandywine River Museum
of Art and a shuttle bus provides transportation from the museum
to each site. Each tour is approximately one hour in length and requires a separate ticket. Tours start April 1, 2020 and run through November 22, 2020.
Wharton Esherick Museum
Wharton Esherick, known as the “Dean of American Craftsmen,”
was a sculptor who worked
primarily in wood, molding furniture, interiors and buildings. His work can be found in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and
the Metropolitan Museum of Art
in New York, among other places. Esherick’s hilltop studio/residence, in Paoli, PA, remains one of his most creative endeavors. He was originally attracted to the site in 1913 by an unusually large wild cherry tree, shading an old farmhouse
that would eventually become his family’s home. When the tree died, he sawed its branches to make paneling in the studio’s dining room. In 1972, the studio became the Wharton Esherick Museum and is now a National Historic Landmark for Architecture. More than 200 pieces of Esherick’s work are on display; it is open to the public
for guided tours by appointment. The Wharton Esherick Museum’s 27th Annual Juried Woodworking Exhibition will be on view September 13, 2020 to December 30, 2020. Through this annual show, the museum encourages the development of new and innovative designs for items of everyday use. This year’s theme, “Wood and...”, explores designs, both functional and expressive, that showcase wood and at least one other medium.
