he healthcare industry is a core University of Maryland St. Joseph economic driver in Baltimore Medical Center in Towson is a Catholic County, with major medical acute care hospital licensed for 221 beds that
replacing older inpatient rooms and creating a grand new entrance for the hospital.
(See rendering at left.) GBMC is known nationally as a leader in high-quality women’s healthcare and cancer care. Its affiliated physician practices also partner closely
with Sheppard Pratt Health System, Maryland’s largest provider of mental-health and substance-abuse services, to ensure continuity of medical and behavioral care.
Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, affiliated with LifeBridge Health, is a 367- room nonprofit hospital that aims to make high-quality care affordable and accessible to all. The hospital is designed according to the Friesen concept, meaning that all patient rooms are private and nurses are assigned to smaller units, so as to ensure that they can spend more time with each patient.
The Baltimore County Department of Health operates centers throughout the county, offering substance use counseling, child and maternal healthcare, behavioral/ mental health treatment, reproductive and sexual health services, and transportation assistance. Those looking for insurance
or services can also look to the nonprofit Health Care Access Maryland for help.

MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, located on the east side
of Baltimore County, provides comprehensive, technology-based surgical care. Its neurosurgery program
is particularly well regarded, due to its successful use of minimally invasive techniques. The medical center’s other specialty service lines include oncology, bariatrics, cardiology, OBGYN, pediatrics, neonatal intensive care, behavioral health, plastic/reconstructive surgery
and ambulatory services. In recent years, MedStar has invested more than $300 million in modernizing the Franklin Square campus, including a new inpatient tower, emergency department, NICU and state-of-the-art surgical pavilion.

Located near the border of Baltimore City and Baltimore County, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is well-prepared to handle the most complex cases: it houses Maryland’s only regional burn center, a Level II trauma center and a pediatric center for emergency care. In addition, the medical center offers primary care and specialty care in more than 30 disciplines. (While Bayview sits near the eastern city/county line, Ascension St. Agnes Hospital can be found at the western border.)
