NEW CASTLE – Time is running out to see the “Italian Immigrant Experience in New Castle” exhibit at the Old Library Museum. The final day in March 29.
While the town of New Castle played
a relatively minor role in the Italian immigration story, the exhibit paints a vivid picture of life in those days.
According to Priscilla Thompson in her book “Arriving in Delaware: The Italian American experience,” Italian settlers at the time came to America not because
of religious or political persecution, but because of economic hardship in Italy and the demand for labor in the United States.
Census records reveal no Italians living among the 1,915 residents of New Castle in 1870. However, their number had grown to about 250 by 1920. Marcozzis, Lallis, Iannis and Pierantozzis were among the first family names.
The first wave of Italians in New Castle settled in the area bounded by Ninth, Young and Clayton streets, in a neighborhood that came to be known as Shawtown. Records show the first Italians in New Castle originated in the Abruzzo region of Italy, and found work in machine shops, in construction
and on railroads.
The earliest known event carried out by the Italian community was the celebration of Columbus Day, according to Alvin Alvini in his book, “A History of Italians in
New Castle.”
It was organized by Giovanni Lalli, and celebrated on Oct. 12, after everyone had returned from work. The observance was held from 1913 to 1918.
The Pestatore Band from Philadelphia supplied the music. The men of the community would assemble in the West End and march through the streets and down Delaware Street to the wharf, according to Alvini.
Mr. Lalli would lead the parade riding a white stallion. His children would carry a picture of Christopher Columbus and the men would follow.
New Castle’s Old Library Museum is an octagon-shaped building of brick and stained
glass at 38 E. Third St. The exhibit is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through March 29. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $4 per person.
The exhibit is sponsored by the New Castle Historical Society, Trustees of the New Castle Common, St. Anthony’s Club, St. Gabriel Lodge 2035, the New Castle Farmers Market and Tom and Sharon Tritelli. IAH
