MORE FUN FOR EVERYONE
Families can enjoy a minor league baseball game at Frawley Stadium, home of the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Now in its 27th season and one of the most successful minor league baseball organizations in the country, the Blue Rocks play 70 home games during the regular season and usually make it to the playoffs. There is a dazzling fireworks display after every Friday night game.
A fitting prelude or addendum to any Blue Rocks home game is a visit to the Delaware Sports Museum & Hall of Fame, also located at Frawley Stadium. The museum traces decades of athletic competitions in the First State from way back in the time of the original Native American Lenni Lenape inhabitants
to the present through memorabilia, artifacts, photos and stories. It is open to the public three hours before Blue Rocks night games and immediately after day games. Admission is free.
Youngsters can gain hands-on experience with everything from ecology to engineering at the Delaware Children’s Museum, which will hold its Summer Kick-Off June 21. Exhibits explore numerous intriguing topics such as The Power of Me, ECOnnect and Structures as well as always-changing programming. Every Friday, the museum extends its hours until 8 p.m., offers unique programming such as Family Game Night and the opportunity to create inventions from recycled materials, and reduces its admission from $9 to $5 from 5 p.m. until closing.
Once a month during the summer, the museum hosts an outdoor event. This year will be the Dog Days of Summer animal program in July, End of Summer bash in August and a Star Wars Science Day September 1, featuring licensed characters from the movies and STEM and art activities.
Explore current topical issues in
art and society through the works of regionally, nationally and internationally recognized artists at The Delaware Contemporary, a dynamic space that hosts more than 24 exhibitions annually. Local up-and-coming talent is also featured and the public is welcome to visit the on-premise working studios of 26 resident artists by appointment or during extended hours on First Fridays.
In late summer or early fall, two
new hotels will be opening on the Riverwalk—a Hyatt Place and a Homewood Suites, expanding the portfolio of comfortable accommodations by a total of 240 rooms.
