Fight Breast Cancer from the Fairways in Wilmington, Philadelphia and Ocean City.
Fighting breast cancer is serious work, but taking the fight to the golf course can turn it into a day of play, while rais- ing important funds for the fight.
That’s why the American Cancer Society is fortunate to have devoted vol- unteers who have organized outstanding golf tournaments this fall.
TAKING A SWING AT THE EASTERN SHORE
The Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament on the Eastern Shore was founded 21 years ago by Nancy Dofflemyer, who cre- ated the famous Pink Ribbon Events: a pickleball tournament, card parties and the Perfect Face raffle. These are feeder fundraisers to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Ocean City.
“I’m passionate about golf and giving back to the community,” explains Nancy, founder of the Eastern Chapter of the Eastern Women’s Golf Association that puts on the annual Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament. “You have to experience this amazing golf event. The women are all dressed in pink. Many are breast can- cer survivors. We fill the field with well over 100 women.
"You can play nine or 18 holes, fol- lowed by a luncheon. It’s competitive but there’s a fun side. You don’t have to com- pete. We welcome brand new golfers.”
The tournament raises approximately $20,000 annually and, “since we began, we’ve raised more than half a million
dollars,” says Nancy, who is the Harrison Hotel Group golf direc- tor. This year, Nancy will pass the tournament torch to a new event chair, Judy Kight, a breast cancer survivor who has been involved in the tournament for many years.
TAKING A SWING
IN WILMINGTON AND PHILADELPHIA
Brand-new this fall are two area golf tournaments to benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events in Wilm- ington and in Philadelphia.
They are the initiative of
Amanda Driggers, who has
a strong family history of
breast cancer. Her mother is
a 20-year survivor, and three
of Amanda’s cousins have
had breast cancer. Amanda,
regional sales manager for Billy Casper Golf, was challenged by her boss to find a worthy organization for a charitable golf tournament, like the one called “The World’s Largest Golf Outing,” which took place at Billy Casper Golf locations throughout the United States on Aug. 6.
“I did some research and chose the American Cancer Society,” says Amanda. “Breast cancer is a cause that is near and dear to me. I could have lost my mom if not for advancements funded in part by
the American Cancer Society.”
A portion of the tournament registra-
tion fee will go to Making Strides. Ad- ditionally, each team is being challenged to raise funds to fight breast cancer.
“There will be a buffet and awards dinner with prizes for the teams who raise the most money for the American Cancer Society,” says Amanda. “It will be a great day. We can accommodate up to 144 players.”
