                 2018 GOVERNOR’S SAFETY AWARDS
The Delaware Department of Labor and DCA have sponsored these awards since 2001, when they were established to recognize and emphasize the importance of safety in the construction industry
by commending those companies who have led the way in promoting safety in the workplace.
Applications are evaluated by utilizing the following criteria: frequency rate of total recordable incidents; safety program’s documentation; policy and management support; training and orientation; work rules and administration and procedures.
The following companies were the winners of the 2018 Governor’s Safety Awards, which were presented at a dinner and a Member Expo held on March 28 at Cavaliers Country Club:

DCA’S NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES
Throughout the year, DCA hosts many social and educational events designed to inform and entertain its members, while providing opportunities for them to interact with each other, their customers, other industry members and government and business leaders.
The activities offer something for everyone, including the annual
Crab Feast; Spring and Fall Golf Outings; the Annual Meeting in October; semi-annual Political Action Committee (PAC) luncheons; the Governor’s Safety Awards Dinner & Member Expo; Sporting
Clay Events in the spring and fall; Governmental Breakfasts; and numerous other events and outings. In addition, DCA provides regular opportunities to meet with candidates and elected officials. This
year, DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan spoke at the Spring CACC Luncheon, and Sen. Chris Coons will speak at the Fall Luncheon. In addition, Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long and Dr. Peter Horton with Project Engage spoke at the April Legislative Breakfast; and New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer spoke at the May Legislative Breakfast.

DCA’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Delaware Contractors Association Scholarship Trust was established in 1989 with a $50,000 investment by the Association to provide scholarships to employees or dependents of employees whose company is a member of the Association. Over the past
30 years, DCA has awarded 105 scholarships, totaling $102,000,
to 64 students. The Scholarship’s name was changed by the Board in 2009 to honor John McMahon upon his retirement,
and is now known as the John J. McMahon Jr. Scholarship.
This year’s recipients include Julia Mauk and Thomas Mauk, both attending Oklahoma State.
While the majority of the recipients have attended the University of Delaware, the list of other schools represented is extensive, including the University of Maryland, Penn State University and the University of Notre Dame, in addition to local schools such as Delaware Technical Community College, Wilmington University and the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades.
The Scholarship Committee is chaired by Gregory Sawka of Bancroft Construction Co., and its members include Ed Devenny of Whisman, Giordano & Associates, LLC; Vincent N. Greggo, Greggo & Ferrara; Gladys King, J&G Building Group; Richard LaPenta, IFS; and Elizabeth Pennington, I.D. Griffith Inc. DCA
is most appreciative of the Committee for its service.
