HAGLEY MUSEUM & LIBRARY
FOUNDER: E. I. du Pont
HISTORY: The first du Pont family home in America was also the site of the gunpowder works along the banks of the Brandywine River, which opened in 1802.
TODAY: Open to the public since 1957,
the 232-acre Hagley property includes restored mills, a workers’ community, the Museum and the preserved ancestral home and gardens of the du Pont family.
WINTERTHUR MUSEUM, GARDEN AND LIBRARY
FOUNDER: Henry Francis du Pont
HISTORY: Born and always at home at Winterthur, H.F. du Pont devoted his life to the house and gardens, from the formal garden areas to the “wild” March Bank.
TODAY: Winterthur offers one of the premier collections of American decorative arts and antiquities in the world, on display inside this magnificent 175-room house on a 1,000-acre preserve.
LONGWOOD GARDENS
FOUNDER: Pierre S. du Pont
HISTORY: Inspired by visits to many world fairs in the late 19th century, Pierre S.
du Pont purchased a small farm property in 1906 to create a place where he could entertain friends with garden parties, water fountains and a “winter garden.”
TODAY: Longwood Gardens is one of
the great gardens of the world, an international destination with more than a million visitors coming for its dazzling horticultural displays every year.
NEMOURS MANSION AND GARDENS
FOUNDER: Alfred I. du Pont
HISTORY: Built as a gift to his wife Alicia, A.I. du Pont hired Carrere and Hastings, a prestigious New York architectural firm, to design a mansion in a late-18th-century French style inspired by Versailles.
TODAY: One of the grandest French formal gardens in North America. The grounds are exquisitely landscaped with fountains, pools and statuary.
