W
ilmington University
recently hosted a
monthly workshop of
Leadership Delaware
Inc., a nonprofit
charitable foundation that identifies,
tutors and mentors outstanding young
Delawareans.
The organization’s Education and
Governance workshop was held in the
boardroom of the Peoples Library Building on
the University’s New Castle campus over two
days. The workshop served as a way for the
selected young leaders, known as Fellows, to
hear from a number of speakers, including Dr.
JimWilson, Vice President of Academic Affairs
at Wilmington University; John Sell, Delaware
Teacher of the Year for 2013; Dr. Patrick Harker,
President of the University of Delaware; Mark
Murphy, Secretary of the Delaware Department
of Education; Rebecca Taber, Education Policy
Adviser to Gov. Jack Markell; and Greg Meece,
Director of the Newark Charter School.
Leadership Delaware, currently in its fi h
class of Fellows, has already established itself
as the preeminent leadership program in the
state. Its issue-oriented forums and experiences
are based on the belief that knowledge is a key
element and prime motivator of leadership.
Fellows, who are typically between the
ages of 25 and 45, are recruited throughout
Delaware, without regard to gender, race,
religion, sexual orientation or political persua-
sion. Participants are selected based on ability,
demonstrated leadership and a keen interest in
making a difference in their community. Fellows
are required to complete three group research
projects over the course of a year. These
projects have, in many cases, been provided to
the top levels of management and government
in the state, including Gov. Jack Markell.
“Leadership Delaware is a great breeding
ground for classroom speakers, internship
opportunities and research topics, as many of
the program participants are from corporate,
nonprofit and government backgrounds,” said
Dr. Dan Young, an assistant professor in the
University’s Doctor of Business Administration
program. He’s also a former Fellow and
member of the Leadership Delaware Alumni
Board of LDI. “It is a wonderful example of
howWilmington University reaches out to the
community to embrace a program that stands
for excellence, leadership and community
service.”
