WILMAPCO’s Public Opinion Survey Results Are In!
T o gain a greater understanding of the communities we serve, WILMAPCO conducts a statistically valid, telephone-based public opinion survey (POS) of the region’s residents, ahead of our Regional Transportation Plan update, which happens every four years. (See page 3 to learn more
about the upcoming RTP update).
The survey includes demographic quotas for race and income to be sure that results are truly representative of the region’s population.
Overall, the transportation system in our area meets the travel needs of those who live here. About three quartersfeeltheirneedsaremeteither “very well” or “somewhat well.”
Whilethisisgoodnews, itstillmeans that the transportation needs of one fourth of our region’s residents are not well met, particularly for low income and minority residents, who make up the majority of that fourth.
We asked respondents their thoughts on the best long-term solutions to
Percent ‘Very’ or ‘Somewhat’ Satisfied With the Transportation System
improve the transportation systems in our area. Improving public transit and signal timing were seen as the top choices (see graph below at left).
Respondents were also asked about their priorities for transportation spending. Here, technology, repairing the existing system, and providing more walk/bike/transit options were the top three. Building more roads
and improving safety were lower priorities.
One of our favorite questions asks about familiarity with WILMAPCO itself. Similar to previous years, close to 30% of respondents are familiar with us. However, interest in signing up for more information from WILMAPCO was lower, with 65% preferring not to.
