Public Feedback to Shape Ardens Transportation Plan
WILMAPCO has been partnering with the Villages of Arden, Ardentown, Ardencroft, and other key stakeholders to develop a local transportation plan. Called “Connecting with the Ardens,” the plan will identify projects that walking, biking, and bus connectivity. servingastheleadprojectconsultant.
Public involvement has been strong. Representatives from all three municipalities, along with New Castle County, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), and DART are serving on the project’s steering committee. Survey results also highlighted the need to improve the Ardens’ walking and biking network, particularly busy road crossings. While there is a relatively extensive trail network, key connections are missing. If they were made, residents and visitors could safely traverse all three communities and beyond without a car.
According to bus ridership data, the existing service in the Ardens is not well utilized. A single route takes residents and workers back and forth from Wilmington. Survey results indicate that Ardens residents
desire alternative east-to-west bus connections to Concord Pike (supported by nearly half) and the Claymont Train Station (supported by three quarters).
Residents are currently prioritizing where bus stops could be enhanced in a second community survey, along with providing feedback on potential speeds and improve walking and bicycling conditions. These projects as: mini-roundabouts, new medians, gateway treatments, and a lane reduction on the eastern approach to the Ardens. Areas of potential new sidewalks, trails, and enhanced roadway crossings are also under consideration.
