ARTS & RECREATION
Runners have hosted a five-mile Turkey Trot for nearly a quarter of a century. Catch the traditional Nutcracker at the Westches- ter County Center in December, and find an Easter egg hunt in nearly every community.
NATURAL BEAUTY
Right in the city of Yonkers, stroll through Untermyer Park & Gardens. It includes Grecian gardens landscaped in the Beaux Arts style, a temple overlooking a mosaic pool, and sculptures around a Greek amphi- theater. In Putnam County, the Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring creates a quiet, re- laxed environment amid stunning beauty. A stone’s throw away, in Patterson, the Great Swamp provides adventurous terrain with more than 6,000 acres of unique habitat and diverse wildlife. Harriman State Park is shared by both Orange and Rockland
Counties. As the second-largest park in the system, it has something for everyone, in- cluding 31 lakes and reservoirs, 200 miles of hiking trails, beaches, campgrounds, and other attractions. Bear Mountain State Park features hiking, biking, and cross- country ski trails, as well as a small zoo, an ice-skating rink, and a merry-go-round based on the animals of the Hudson Valley.
The parks in each county provide all sorts of outdoor activities, from playgrounds for children to trails for hiking and biking to water activities, to name a few. The Bronx River Parkway trails run from New York City’s border to the Kenisco Dam Plaza in Valhalla. Three paved segments of the Path- way include a one-mile loop near Oak Street in Mount Vernon, a nearly four-mile section from Palmer Road in Bronxville to Harney Road in Scarsdale, and a five-mile trail from
Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring
Hartsdale’s Green Acres Avenue to the Ken- sico Dam Plaza.
Nature Centers also care for the local habitat and hold events all year to share with visitors. Tap into the maple trees at Rye Nature Center; watch eagles soar at Teatown; visit the animals at the Bear Mountain Zoo across the Hudson.
Sports for the amateur and adventurer are also available. Kayak along the Hudson; hike trails to lakes, falls, and cliffs; bike lei- surely on a Sunday. If golfing is your game, there are championship-caliber courses across the area, many offering amazing scenery along each fairway. Even the pros can be found swinging locally as major tour- naments hit the fairways.
PERFORMING ARTS
Westchester Broadway Theatre (WBT) in Elmsford is the longest-running, year- round professional theater in the state, with more than 40 years’ worth of shows to its credit. WBT offers mainstage the- atrical productions, with Actors’ Equity performers boasting tour and Broadway credits, all served up with a terrific dinner. Nationally acclaimed performers take their bows at other local venues, too, including Tarrytown Music Hall, the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater, White Plains Performing Arts Center, The Capitol Theater, and West Point’s 4,400-capac- ity Eisenhower Hall Theatre (Orange County), which is America’s largest theater after Radio City Music Hall. In 2017, Ike Hall will stage Annie, Cirque Dreams: Jungle Fantasy, and Rhythm of the Dance. Aaron Copland and Paulette Goddard founded the Rockland Center for the Arts just after World War II. It continues to hold exhibitions of painters and sculptors, runs a school for developing artists and hosts a variety of performances.
With a capacity of 4,400, Eisenhower Hall Theatre in Orange County is the nation’s largest theater, after Radio City Music Hall. Below: The Bear Mountain Zoo brings nature’s majesty right to your doorstep.
