Westchester, which draws on a history dating back to before the Revolution, is home to nearly a million people as diverse as their communities. The cities of New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, Yonkers, White Plains, Rye, and Peekskill are vibrant centers of art, cul- ture, and recreation, while the towns and villages surrounding them create communi- ties that people are proud to call home.
Although Westchester is known for its vast and beautiful offering of residential opportunities, the county is also home to a number of international corporations, including General Foods, Nestle, Heinek- en, IBM, MasterCard, and PepsiCo. In fact, businesses of virtually every size and type, including Regeneron, the fifth-largest bio- tech firm in the world, are based here.
The Hudson River has always been a draw to those with an artistic bent. Today, West- chester is home to performing-arts centers, galleries, museums, theater groups, and orchestras. The natural beauty extends to the area’s myriad parks, golf courses, and nature preserves.
The diversity of the communities is matched by the range of restaurants and gourmet markets ready to appease any taste. It will take more than Restaurant Week to explore the many delicacies cel- ebrating the cultures of every continent, with all the chefs calling Westchester home. Crisscross the nearly 450 square miles of the county, and you will discover delicious cuisine of every stripe, from sushi to tacos, from American pub fare to fine French din- ing. Eat from morning ’til night with break- fast, brunches, and dessert bars.
Shoppers can also find a smorgasbord of offerings, with antique stores, upscale bou- tiques, big-box retailers, and major malls throughout the county. Many towns have shops that have been owned and operated by the same families for generations. Just ex- ploring Westchester County’s many cities, towns, and villages is an adventure in itself.
