When you live in Westchester, there’s no need to travel into Manhattan to enjoy world-class healthcare. That’s because the greatest names in healthcare are expanding their reach into the County, offering access to some of New York’s leading specialists. Here are some recent highlights in the dynamic Westchester healthcare market.
In 2017, The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) opened a $20 million, 50,000-square- foot regional center at 1133 Westchester Ave. in White Plains. Expanding HSS services for Lower Hudson Valley patients, the new cen- ter will include 20 exam rooms and provide a broad range of rehabilitation services.
Bronx-based Montefiore operates nine facilities across Westchester.
White Plains Hospital, a member of the Montefiore Health System, opened a state-of-the-art cancer center in 2016.
In West Harrison, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center now occupies a 114,000-square-foot complex previously occupied by Verizon. The $143 million cancer center opened in 2014. NewYork- Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital in Bronx- ville also opened a new cancer center.
Expanding its presence in Westchester, ColumbiaDoctors opened a 20,000 square foot medical facility in Tarrytown that ex- pands its services in the region.
NorthWell Health now operates Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, as well as Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco.
WESTMED Medical Group opened an 85,000-square-foot medical office building at 3030 Westchester Ave. in 2015, marking the first time in more than 25 years a new office building was constructed along the I-287 corridor.
WMCHEALTH’S AMBULATORY CARE PAVILION BRINGS INNOVATIVE OUTPATIENT CARE TO REGION
In September 2017, the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) and Westchester County celebrated the height of construction on the health network’s new, $230 million, 280,000 square foot Ambulatory Care Pavilion adjacent to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla – the largest healthcare construction project in Westchester County in four decades.
The project was financed by the West- chester County Local Development Corpo- ration (LDC) to make tax exempt financing available for not-for-profit organizations at no expense to the county’s taxpayers. The LDC amended its bylaws to expand the nonprofit status reach to public benefit corporations like WMCHealth.
Slated for completion in 2018, the fa- cility responds to a need for additional space for Westchester Medical Center’s growing programs and patient volume.
“As the region’s leading healthcare re- source, Westchester Medical Center Health Network is committed to providing the high quality advanced care that the residents of our region expect and deserve,” said Michael D. Israel, President and CEO of WMCHealth, at the Pavillion’s “Topping Off ” ceremony.
The eight-story steel and glass facil- ity will include an Advanced Imaging Cen- ter, Ambulatory Surgery Center and Heart and Vascular Institute, in addition to a 20,000-square-foot expansion in private rooms for the medical center and 75,000 additional square feet for physicians’ offices.
With the growth of WMCHealth to include seven hospitals and a workforce of more than 12,000 people, the construction of the new facility is expected to generate 180 new full-time jobs when complete, as well as 225 prevailing wage construction jobs. The construction project is believed to be one of Westchester County’s largest non-residential building projects in recent memory and is the largest healthcare con- struction project since the construction of the WMCHealth main tower in 1977 and the 250,000-square-foot Maria Fareri Chil- dren’s Hospital in 2004.
