Creativity, learning, and curiosity:
that’s the ethos at Habitas on Hudson, where guests are encouraged to mingle and connect. Engage with artists in residence, try crystal sound bowl meditation, play tennis, or enjoy the barrel sauna, nearby hiking trails, and outdoor concerts. A long driveway leads to a gracious neo-baroque manor where minimalist yet luxurious rooms are named after famous authors.
The 20-room boutique hotel’s centerpiece is its aptly named restaurant, Social, an airy, window-filled space
that offers communal dining. Menu standouts include a sprightly shakshuka for breakfast and a lamb kofta kebab sandwich with sumac-dusted red onions for lunch. The smashed cucumber salad showcases Chef Nicholas Cox’s salsa macha, a hybrid of traditional salsa and Chinese chili crisp. A wood-fired grill
and plancha turn out flatbreads, grilled and roasted whole fish, and plant-based dishes, like broccolini with soy dressing. Social’s bar menu includes an inventive spicy and sweet tequila-based tipple with Mexican corn liquor, beer from spots like Kingston Standard and Industrial Arts breweries, and New York State wines. The must-order dessert: a brownie with dark chocolate, dulce de leche, and caramelized milk chocolate ganache. Activities: Visit the Staatsburg State Historic Site, an elegant Gilded Age Beaux Arts mansion. Just north in Rhinebeck, catch an airshow at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, or check out the shops downtown.
