MEET THE CAPTAIN
ISHARON LYN URBAN
n July, Sharon Lyn Urban was promoted to captain of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, making the Cape May resident the first permanent female with that ranking in the history of
the Delaware Bay Service. Urban joined the Ferry crew as an
ordinary seaman in 1997. With additional certifications and
accrued sea time, she rose through the ranks, serving as an
able-bodied seaman, mate and pilot. To prepare for her duties,
she earned a United States Coast Guard Inland Masters license
of unlimited tonnage and a USCG First Class Pilot certification
on the Delaware Bay. Urban is also certified in CPR/First Aid,
advanced marine firefighting, and marine and radar operations.
“I’ve been in training for this position for 29 years, and it’s a tremendous opportunity,” she says.
As a manager and leader at the Ferry, Urban has full responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel and the safety of passengers and crew. She’s also responsible for compliance with all regulations applicable to the interstate marine transportation of vehicles and passengers. “I love being on the water,” Urban says. “I take pride in providing the best possible service for our customers and leading by example.” TCT
