The Jobs of Tomorrow
Every year, the construction contracting community joins with organized union labor to meet students who are eager to discover and explore skill-building activities and learn about well- paying career opportunities in the building trades. The Hudson
Valley Construction Career Day (HVCCD) exposition attracts 700 high school juniors and seniors from a four-county region to question industry experts and discuss the many pathways to success in construction and building — as well as the advantages of apprenticeship training to earn while they learn.
Staged at Rockland Community College in Suffern in early spring, the HVCCD expo gives students an introduction to some of the tools of the trade. Guided by union instructors, they get the feel for bricklaying and masonry, welding and soldering, carpentry and plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems — some even take the controls of earth-moving excavation equipment and sit in the cab of a heavy-duty dump truck simulator.
The event is co-hosted by the Construction Industry Council and the Building Contractors Association of Westchester & The Mid-Hudson Region. For more information, visit www.cicbca.org.
