 FOREWORD
“F or 100 years, bringing the world to Baltimore” is the tagline commemorating Rukert Terminals’ centennial celebration. As bold and profound — and
utterly true — as that statement may be, within those few short words lies an
amazing story about a company that has been so integral to the development of the great Port of Baltimore, and to the economy of Maryland and beyond.
Today, behind the modest offices down on Clinton Street along the Canton waterfront, lies a true American success story that began in the heart of Baltimore 100 years ago. The story of this continuously privately-owned and operated family business — a type of longevity that is exceedingly rare — began in 1921 when Cap Rukert had a vision. Along with his brother George, he secured a loan for $800, bought a truck, rented a stable and started the Atlas Safe Deposit and Storage Company, an entity that would become Rukert Terminals Corporation. In doing so, he set in motion the creation of a company that would become a stalwart of Baltimore’s waterfront, and a driving force of its economy.
In his more than 50 years of leadership at Rukert Terminals, Cap became a legend in the Port of Baltimore; a visionary businessman who sought opportunity, took calculated risks, reinvested heavily, and believed there was no substitute for hard work. Today, that work ethic and ethos is still evident as the company is led by Cap’s grandson Norm Rukert Jr., along with fourth-generation family members and other long-serving leaders. They now oversee a diverse terminal operation with a global network of customers supported by nearly 200 employees.
As impressive as Rukert Terminals’ growth and longevity may be, it is the positive impact of its success upon thousands of Maryland families and other businesses that is truly remarkable. The company is well-regarded for looking after its employees, and its local achievements are undeniable. Since its inception, Rukert Terminals has paid over $500 million in wages, over $150 million in local taxes, and pumped more than $1.5 billion into the local economy.
It is a great honor for me to provide this foreword. The PNC team and I are grateful for our long relationship with Rukert Terminals. It is a privilege to support the accomplishments of this great company and the contributions it continues to make on behalf of the wonderful people of Baltimore!
