P. 2

In 1921, W.G.N. “Cap” Rukert started a moving and storage business with his brother George. With an unsecured $800 loan and ample
ambition, the brothers purchased a truck and rented an empty stable in West Baltimore. They named their venture the Atlas Safe Deposit and Storage Company — a fitting name for an enterprise that would quickly expand into global maritime commerce. A century after its founding, that fledgling business has evolved into The Rukert Terminals Corporation, one of the largest privately-owned marine terminals on the East Coast.
In this illustrated history, Cap Rukert’s son and great-granddaughter trace the growth of this continuously family-owned and operated business over 100 years and across four generations. They highlight a century of challenges and triumphs as well as the contributions of family leaders and dedicated employees. The first 100 years of Rukert Terminals tell a story of tradition and progress in the great Port of Baltimore.
