The first vessel unloaded on the finished “B” berth was the M/V Viljandi, a Ro-Ro ship carrying aluminum, on March 30, 2009. McLean finished dredging the “B” berth to a depth of 50 feet later that year. This made Rukert Terminals’ new berth the deepest in the Port of Baltimore. A 50-foot berth allowed the company to accommodate the largest ocean-going vessels that other terminals could not. Once maintenance dredging was
complete at the other berths, Rukert once again had the capacity to work four vessels simultaneously.
One day, about halfway through the reconstruction of “B” berth, Norm and Steve were standing together on the pier. They noticed that many of the sheet pile pairs removed from the old pier were still in good condition. They also noticed a surplus of steel beams from the current project. Steve had the idea to use both to extend the pier,
