Day 2
After a great first day, the general
session kicked off with a presentation on COVID-19 & North Carolina’s Shifting Demography from Dr. James Johnson, Jr., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Johnson is a Distinguished Professor in the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC. The presentation highlighted the gaps in the workforce caused by COVID-19 and ways to be adaptable in an ever-changing work environment. Next up was a presentation on the Economic Impact of the Forest Products Industry in Western North Carolina presented by Nathan Ramsey from the Land of Sky Economic Council. Ramsey went into detail on the impact of the Pactiv Evergreen Canton mill’s closing on the economics of the forestry industry in western NC and across the state.
Next was a presentation titled Global Opportunities for American Hardwoods, given by Tripp Pryor from the American Hardwood Export Council. Pryor discussed how the international lumber and furniture market in China has become less active for American hardwoods in
recent years. The presentation shed light on a unique aspect of the US forestry industry. The final meeting presentation was
Forest Reliant Communities Guidebook, presented by Alicia Cramer from the US Endowment for Forestry and Communities. The NCFA extends a gracious thank you to all of our presenters!
The NCFA offered leisure activities for attendees on Thursday afternoon, with options to play golf at the Omni Grove
Park, shoot clays at Fowler Farms, or explore the Biltmore Estate and Asheville.
The NCFA President’s Reception and awards banquet took place Thursday evening.
